A lip bumper is a dental appliance that works to create more space in your mouth for your teeth. The device comprises a thin wire coated in plastic that lines the front side of your lower teeth and attaches to metal molar bands on each side of your mouth. The bumper puts gentle force on the back teeth, stretching the arch of your lower jaw to create space.
Lip bumpers often supplement braces or are a common alternative to tooth extraction. This treatment option is most effective on children before they have lost all of their primary teeth because it creates space for their adult teeth to come in properly.
You might need a lip bumper appliance if you have crowded or crooked teeth, which can occur when there isn’t enough space in your lower jaw. A lip bumper holds the lower molars back and allows your front teeth to move forward, providing greater space.
