Lower Expander

LOWER EXPANDER

A lower expander is used to help reduce crowding by expanding the lower teeth.

HOW IT WORKS

The key is inserted into the hole and then pushed all the way to the back toward the throat. This will bring the next hole into view.

The lower expander is cemented in place and the screw must be turned by your parent.

REASONS WHY YOU MAY BE WEARING ONE

There isn't enough space for all the lower teeth and the back teeth may be leaning in toward the tongue.

HOW YOU'LL FEEL

Your teeth might be uncomfortable for a day or two. After a week you may feel a little itching in floor of your mouth. This is normal.

HOW TO CLEAN

Brush as usual.

Use the water spray or oral lavage to flush out between the plastic (or metal) and the roof of your mouth.

Use your favorite mouthwash to swish it clean.

Dr. Goldreich will provide you with explicit instructions regarding the activation of your expanders. You must regularly activate the appliances according to the schedule and instructions given by Dr. Goldreich. Do not rush or delay the activation of the appliance. Clean the appliances carefully each time you brush. This and mouthwash will keep the appliances free of food and prevent irritation.
