Adult Treatment
Orthodontic treatment can be successful at any age and adults especially appreciate the benefits of a beautiful smile. One of every five patients in orthodontic treatment is over 21. Adults can often be treated with either traditional metal or clear braces that are bonded to the teeth or with new techniques such as Invisalign, or behind the teeth braces (lingual braces (Incognito - formerly iBraces)), which offer a more aesthetic and less restrictive treatment.
Are There Health Advantages To Adult Orthodontic Treatment?
Yes. Without orthodontic treatment, your teeth can:
- Be harder to clean
- Wear unevenly
- Cause discomfort
- Cause your digestive system to age faster
How is adult orthodontic treatment different than teenage orthodontic treatment?
It is basically the same, with a few minor differences:
- Harder to stretch/enlarge your mouth
- Occasionally jaw surgery is necessary to completely align the jaws in non-growing patients.
What does adult orthodontic treatment feel like?
After the orthodontist puts on your braces, your mouth will be tender for about a week, but then the tenderness should go away, and you will hardly notice your braces except when they are tightened. The pain is manageable and the results will make you look fantastic.
Will I be stuck with a "metal mouth" look when I have braces?
Definitely not. Braces have changed a lot in the last 20 years and you do not have to get a metal mouth when you get braces. There are many different options to make the braces invisible (Invisalign, braces behind the teeth (Incognito - formerly iBraces)) and to dramatically shorten the treatment time (SureSmile).
